UHC is a research alliance for nonprofit academic medical centers around the nation. They conduct studies on the effiicency and quality of hospital supply chains. Since 2007, UHC has been giving awards to healthcare organizations with the best supply chain systems. They conduct a study each year and then present awards based on their findings. There are several categories, including Supply Chain Performance Excellence Awards, Rising Star Award, Supplier Diversity Leadership Award, and Sustainability Award. The 2014 award recipients for Supply Chain Performance Excellence are:

  • Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak
  • Denver Health (#1 Public Safety Net Hospital)
  • The University of Vermont Medical Center
  • University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
  • University of Utah Health Care
  • University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics

These performance excellence healthcare organizations consistently use best practices in their supply chains. They align their clinical staff with their supply chain staff to ensure patients get the best care possible in a timely manner. UHC’s study concluded that these supply chain organizations excelled in their approach, commitment to continuous improvement, evidence-based evaluations, distribution processes, and physician communication.

The Supplier Diversity Leadership Award went to the University of Maryland Medical System and the UHC Sustainability Award went to HealthPartners. Both of these healthcare organizations show superior leadership and commitment to patients. The Rising Star Award went to Barnes-Jewish Hospital because of their quick advancement through the rankings last year.

When people think about health care, their minds automatically turn to the doctors nurses, and other clinicians that provide service. People don’t typically think about the supply chains behind the operations. Without warehouses, distribution personnel, buyers, and other supply chain professionals, hospitals and clinics could not do their job effectively. That’s why UHC is recognizing the supply chain organization behind successful hospitals and clinics.
